Persona protects us, and can also make us forget ourselves

Persona lets us move through work, intimacy, and public life. The question is not whether we have a mask, but whether only the mask remains.

A mask can be a function

Showing different sides in different settings is not automatically false. Often it is mature social functioning.

A person can be a professional colleague, a reliable partner, and a quiet friend; each may be partly true.

The danger is over-identification

When someone becomes identical with “I must be reliable,” “I must be brilliant,” or “I must care for everyone,” the mask begins to consume the living person.

What is hidden behind the mask may return as exhaustion, emptiness, or sudden loss of control.

Leave a room for yourself

An inner room gives you a place to set roles down for a moment and hear a more complex self.

You do not need to tear away every mask. Begin by asking which role is most tired today, and which self wants permission to appear.
